  Science shows for schools

Looking for an entertaining and educational show that involves children and can help you meet your curriculum requirements?

As a qualified high school science teacher, with over 7 years experience in educational settings from kindergartens, primary schools, and tertiary, I have a number of high quality science shows and hands on science workshops for schools. Whether to introduce a new topic, or as a reward for a hard working class, your students will love a visit from MrJoe.

Toys

A fun show all about working scientifically and exploring the science behind our favourite toys! Learn about the air powered rocket, the returning roller, the rocket balloon and the jumping frogs. Help your p-3 students get fully engaged in science right from the start (and get some great ideas for yourself as well!!)

Energy and change D1.4

Lower primary students (p-3)

A derivative of the fully Education Queensland accredited Starter Science Program

5 big ideas

A show designed to give upper primary students the edge in high school science! Learn about Inertia, Working scientifically (including observation and inference), the science of spectrums, atomic theory and Asking Science Questions. An explosive show!!

Working scientifically: investigating, understanding, exploring

For upper primary students (yrs 6-7)

Space

Explore the mysteries of Space with this fun show for younger students. Lots of safe fun and you’ll learn the most amazing things!!

Earth and Space 1.2, D1.4 and D3.4

Recommended for grades 1-3

The Energy Show

This highly successful show is aimed at years 5 - 8 students. We discuss energy transfer and transforming, and how the laws of thermodynamics effect each and everyone of us. This leads into a discussion on every conservation. Students have hands on time (which can take the form of an inquiry based activity I call the question quest) where students explore forms and uses of energy in the everyday.

Energy and change 3.2 and D3.5

Recommended for grades 3-5

Materials

Make it Matter with this fun and engaging science show about the properties of materials! Complete with hands on science workshops.

Natural and processed Materials 3.2 and 4.1

Recommended for grades 3 to 5.

Forces and Motion

An entertaining show which explores the phenomenon of forces and motion. Students will be introduced to the history, and applications, of Newtons three laws of motion. For instance, we attempt to pin down the illusive concept of a reaction force such as friction, and we learn that things will only start moving, and only stop moving, once a force is applied. Discuss how we create motion using forces, and forces from all kinds of energy.

Suitable to grade 2-4 and 5-7. We explore the laws of motion and how they apply to the everyday, and in older groups tackle friction and forces.

Core objective:

Energy and Change D4.4 Students explore properties of some common force and energy phenomena by playing with toys.

Additional objectives:

Energy and Change 4.1 Students design and perform investigations into relationships between forces, motion and energy.

Science and Society 4.1 Students outline some contributions to the development of scientific ideas made by people from different cultural and historical backgrounds.

Air Science

MrJoes premier show, this show challenges what we take for granted about the almost magical properties of Air. Students will engage in scientific thinking as they attempt to explain the air powered rocket, the uncrushable bottle, and the un-popable balloon. A fun show for children of all ages.

Water Science

The water science show is an amazing look at something we take for granted every day, but need to stay alive even for one minute! Have fun, and get involved, as we explore ideas about conservation, physics of water, and what this amazing stuff is made of!

Custom Built Programs

Stuck on friction, burnt out on energy? Mr Joe is happy to help out with those topics you love the least! With over 7 years experience in science education, from kindergarten to tertiary settings, from outback to the bustling city, Mr Joe the freelance science edutainer will make the any topic exciting with engaging, entertaining educational science programs for school and preschools. Complete with worksheets and teacher helper booklet.

Booking information

On the day I request a single room to work from due to the large amount of equipment that I bring. The room requires working power points and good ventilation: air conditioning is highly recommended. Usually a normal classroom will suffice. I move all the chairs out, put the tables in five stations around the room, and leave the center for children to sit on the floor. Needless to say, I require a teacher present at all times. Parents are very welcome at all my shows, and up to 4 grown up helpers are recommended (but by no means necessary, especially in upper primary school levels). Please do not schedule any fire drills on the day.
